The Whisky connection to 4 South End – “Monivey”

In the 1920’s this part of Stromness would have been a busy place to be.  Stromness Museum today was back then the Town Hall and on the site of Mayburn Court there was a Whisky Distillery.

The Distillery was founded in 1817 by John Crookshanks and produced 7,000 gallons of whisky per year.

The distillery owned according to an account by Alfred Barnard in 1887, two ‘Bonded Warehouses’ - a place to store whisky ‘duty free’ before consumption or sale.

The garage at No. 4 South End is believed to have been part of one of these warehouses and the only remaining part of the distillery to this day.  A section of sloping wall forming part of the garage is shown below:-

Ownership of the distillery passed several times until it eventually closed in 1928 when it was at that point owned by the Belfast based McConnell’s Distillery Company Ltd.

The distillery grounds were then demolished for housing in the 1940’s.
